Clarence Philip Avery III known to all as Philip, passed away peacefully at his home on September 25, 2025. He was born in Richmond Virginia on May 26, 1952. He graduated from Huguenot High School and attended Chowan College. He worked as an engineer at Roadrailer, designing integrated wheels for train containers. He then joined DataScope as a biomedical engineer where he serviced and assisted in development in medical equipment. He also joined Operation Smile on a volunteer trip to the country of Kenya in Africa to assist with equipment maintenance and training of local employees.
While his professional work was meaningful to him, Philip’s true passion was always music. From his high school days through his time at Chowan College and beyond, he played in multiple bands. He was a gifted rhythm guitar and bass player who drew inspiration from the sounds of Clapton, Hendrix, and Gatton. Beyond performing, he loved the sound engineering side of music recording performances, fine-tuning the audio, and playing them back so the bands could reflect on both the highlights and the lessons learned. He also found joy in the technical side of music, often rebuilding amplifiers and other gear, bringing together his knack for tinkering with his love for sound. His blend of musicianship, creativity, and hands-on skill made him a cherished part of every group he worked with.
Philip is survived by his loving wife, Frances; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Michele; and his grandchildren, Michael and Alexander. He is also survived by his sister Diane and her husband, Steve, and his sister Janice. Philip will be lovingly remembered for the joy he shared with his sweet puppies, Ella and Lizzie. He leaves behind a legacy as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, musician, and friend whose love of music and family enriched the lives of all who knew him.
