Dr. Robert Lannes Wood

Dr. Robert L. Wood, age 98, passed away peacefully in Fairfax Virginia February 10, 2023, with family by his side. He is preceded in death by his father Horace I Wood, his mother Ethel Peters Wood, his wife Joyce Shirley Wood (Young), his sister Dorothy Andrew and a daughter Patricia E Browder. He is survived by daughter Dr. Adrienne J Royo, his sons Dr. Samuel H Wood (Robyn), Dr. Robert M Wood (Linda) and Daniel B Wood (Anda). Surviving grandchildren include: Angela, Daniel, Irene, Louisa, Angelica, Genevieve, Alex, Samuel, Rachel, Paisley, Brady and Elliot. The surviving great-grandchildren include: Nathaniel, Ethan, Elijah, Eva and Simone.

Dr. Wood was born in Portland Oregon February 24, 1924. While growing up he earned Eagle Scout rank. He went on to serve honorably in the United State Army Medical Corp in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following military service, he married Joyce Shirley Young in Fresno California June 30, 1949. He earned multiple graduate-level degrees during his education and used that knowledge and expertise for the betterment of the health and well-being of his fellow humans. His primary life’s work was as a physician in Preventive Medicine. In that capacity he served as the Assistant Medical Director for the State of Virginia Public Health Department. He was also faithfully involved with the Seventh-Day Adventist church, serving on the Potomac Conference Executive Committee for 19 years.

His funeral services will include: a Visitation service at the Parham Road Woody’s Funeral Home between 5 and 8 pm Friday February 17, 2023, and a Celebration of Life service at the Far West End Seventh-Day Adventist Church beginning at 4:30 pm Saturday February 18, 2023. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Dr. Robert L. Wood and Joyce Shirley Wood Endowment Scholarship in the Modern Languages Department of Southern Adventist University at southern.edu/give. Special thanks to the staff and administrators at The Gardens at Fairfax Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Fairfax Virginia.
