Dwight Michael (Mike) Seckler, 81, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 20th surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Mike lived a life marked by integrity, service, humility, and above all, a deep love for Jesus Christ and family.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, Mike spent most of his life in the Tidewater area before relocating to Richmond in 2016, to be closer to his daughters. He proudly served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force, and later built a lifelong career as a master electrician. He was co-founder and former owner of ARC Electric, Inc., a commercial electrical contracting company where his commitment to excellence and mentorship shaped the lives and professions of countless others.
Mike loved deep sea fishing and was known for hosting an annual pig pickin’. He had a gift for working with his hands and could fix anything. Whether crafting beautiful pieces in his woodworking shop, or taking on home repair projects large and small, he brought ingenuity and skill to all he did. But his greatest joy came not from his hobbies or what he built, but from those he did it with or built it for - his family and friends. In retirement, his favorite “hobby” was simply spending time with them: laughing, teasing, supporting, mentoring, and showing up with quiet consistency.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Bailey Seckler; daughters Elizabeth Seckler Stuckey (Mac) and Angela Seckler Williams; grandchildren Sharon Williams, Shanté Dundee, Kate Stuckey, Jack Stuckey, McRae Stuckey, Leona Williams, and Claire Stuckey; five great-grandchildren; sister Gail Wayland; sister-in-law Jean Garrett, brother-in-law Ralph Bailey, four nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight Noah Seckler and Frances Wright Seckler; his sister, Cynthia Seckler Hayes; and his daughter, Michelle Leigh Seckler.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 8th at River Road United Methodist Church, 8800 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229.
Mike’s legacy is one of faithfulness, quiet strength, selfless love, and the kind of wisdom that comes not just from knowledge, but from a life well lived and generously shared. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Open Table, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization serving individuals and families working to overcome poverty. Donations can be made here: otva.funraise.org
