Born February 2, 1926, Evelyn was the epitome of love, kindness and strength. She dedicated her life to her family, always putting the needs of others before herself and it showed in all she did.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Wallace Mancino and Katherine Eubank Barnes, and the love of her life…her husband, Wilfred Richard Matthews.
She is survived by her children, Diane Jackson (Reid Gilley), Susan Fischer, Rich Matthews (Sarah), and Rob Matthews (Pam); grandchildren, Michael (Rachel), Brett, Kirk, Kyle, Gwen (Christopher) and Gabby (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Hannah, Khyler, and Cora, and sister Mary Ellen Connell.
Evelyn enjoyed decorating, gardening, writing poetry, and cooking. She loved preparing for family gatherings and celebrations which were often held at her home. She was an active member of Cavalry Baptist Church and taught Sunday School classes. She also served for many years as the unofficial chairperson of the Three Chopt Estates Gas Light Beautification Committee where she would make sure that wreathes or floral arrangements were placed at the entrance for each season.
As a mother, her love knew no bounds and her children were the light of her life. She was always there offering love, wisdom, compassion and unwavering support. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was a beacon, and in return they brought her joy and happiness that brightened her soul.
The family wishes to recognize, with a tremendous amount of gratitude and appreciation, the amazing nurses that helped take care of her during the last 26 months. To Rosa, Miesha, Nikki and Pauline - your companionship and caregiving were exemplary, and we can never thank you enough.
The family is also grateful to Dr. G. Joseph Mehfoud and At Home Health for their care and assistance over the past several months.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29th from 5:00-8:00pm at Woody’s Funeral home on N. Parham Road.
A private service and interment will take place at Westhampton Memorial & Cremation Park.
