Dr. George William Gander “Bill” passed away peacefully at the age of 95 surrounded by family on Sunday, July 20 at Cedarfield, his home for the last 12 years. Bill was born in Hamilton, Montana on June 27, 1930, to Loren D. and Blanche M. Gander. He graduated from Montana State University and went on to earn his PhD at Cornell University. While in Ithaca, NY, Bill met Elizabeth “Becky” who later became his wife on February 1, 1958. After that, it was always “Bill and Becky”. Upon moving to Richmond, VA in 1963, Bill worked for MCV for over 30 years in the Pathology and Laboratory Information Systems departments. Bill was brilliant and presented his ground-breaking research internationally. After retirement, he enjoyed more time for the two hobbies he loved the most, sailing and woodworking. He had 3 boats in his lifetime and spent much time in Deltaville and Urbanna during weekends. Becky always said that he was never happier than when sailing. In addition to his extensive accomplishments and zest for life, Bill always had time and energy for family and many lifelong friends. His wife, Becky, was the love of his life and reason for living. They were happily married for 67 years and had many adventures together. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He never missed an opportunity to mentor, play, support, and laugh with each of them any chance he got. He was known for being able to fix anything. His smile and genuine kindness lit up the room wherever he went. When any of us met someone who knew Bill, they always said one or more of the following: “I adore him”, or “I love him”, or “he’s always smiling and so kind”. His light, kindness, and positive energy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Becky; his children: Joseph (Candice) Gander, Nicholas (Donna) Gander, and Sarah (Charles) Gander Gray; his grandchildren: Gillian (Jay) Feyerabend, Johanna Gray, Nicholas Gander, and Kathryn Pearl. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Blanche Gander, and his brother John Gander.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 11th at 11am. It will be at the Chapel at Cedarfield, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Henrico, VA 23233, officiated by Chaplain Trish Bracken Carter.
Special thanks to the Cedarfield staff for caring deeply about him and treating him like family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The American Cancer Society.
