GAULT, Mrs. Gertrude “Gertie” W., of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, exactly one week before her 88th birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Mildred Carr Allen of Roanoke, and Col. R.C. “Buck” Weaver of Lexington. Gertie was born and raised in Lexington where her father taught physics at VMI. He was also Assistant Commandant for many years. At the time, that meant their home was the “old Library” which was located right beside the VMI barracks. Gertie grew up known to legions of VMI cadets as “Bucket”. Literally growing up within yards of VMI, she may have in fact been the first female to unofficially “attend” VMI. She graduated from Lexington High School and attended Madison College in Harrisonburg. Her passion for VMI never wavered over the years. Later in life, she spent several years working in the women’s retail business at LaVogue and Montaldo’s at the River Road Shopping Center. Her family will miss the beautiful needlepoint that consumed so much of her time over the past few years. Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Morris and her husband, Steve; son, Lanny Gault and his wife, Terry Sue; three granddaughters, Kari Rochelle, Kathryn Morris, and Carter Smith; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Mirka; and her ex-husband, Ronald L. Gault. The family wants to extend special thanks to all of the caregivers that have helped Gertie over the past couple of years, in particular to “Missie” and “Shani”, for all you have done for “GG” in giving her companionship and providing peace of mind for the family. Her remains rest at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VMI Foundation, the VMI Keydet Club or the S.P.C.A . (She loved her kitty cats!).
