

Harold Marshall Goodman, Jr died on June 28, 2024, aged 81 years. He was a long time resident of Midlothian Virginia and at his passing a resident of the Hermitage Richmond assisted living facility. His boyhood home in Ginter Park could be seen from the Hermitage facility.
He was born in Richmond Virginia on May 21, 1943, his parents, Kathryn (Billups) Goodman and Dr. Harold Marshall Goodman, Sr. were life long residents of Richmond.
After graduation from Hargrave Military Academy he attended Campbell University and entered the US Coast Guard, serving in the Coast Guard reserve.
His early interest in antiques, Americana and other historical cultural objects defined his life’s focus and professional direction. He was largely self-taught, acquiring his knowledge by persistent study and research, and his knowledge and expertise were widely admired in the antique community in Virginia and more widely. He was a long- time Richmond antique dealer.
He had many significant discoveries over the years and believed things “belonged” in certain locations or collections. He was responsible for the rescue of enormous bodies of cultural material.
A notable achievement was his major role in preserving and identifying material from the Benjamin DuVal Stoneware Manufactory in Richmond in 2005. This resulted in a significant publication in Ceramics in America (“The Destruction of the Benjamin DuVal Stoneware Manufactory, Richmond, Virginia”)
He served as a member of the board of directors of the 18th Century Prestwould Plantation and Gardens in Mecklenburg county Virginia.
His family was always important to him. His devotion to his mother in her declining years and his continuing interest in his two sisters demonstrated his compassion for family. He was always ready to help out the less fortunate when encountered.
He is survived by his two sisters Susan Sargent Ahearn of Amherst NH and Kathryn Grey Schladweiler of New Ulm MN,
