

Harry Shepard Rowland, Jr., 88, of Richmond, died peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2015, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his beloved wife of 8 1/2 years Jacqueline Rhodes Rowland and five children: Susan Mellow and her husband Andy, Ann Beauchamp and her husband Ray, Tom Rowland, Ric Rowland and his wife Carey, and Holly Phillips and her husband Rufus. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Meagan Millar and Erin Mellow; Rachel, Paul and Lee Beauchamp; Ian, Sara, and Hope Rowland; Latane and Hallie Rowland; and Cole and Megan Phillips. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Lorna Beres Rowland.
Dr. Rowland graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and obtained his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School. He entered the United States Navy as a Flight Surgeon and served on the USS Kearsarge, CV-33. For 28 years, Dr. Rowland practiced urology in Richmond. VA. After retiring from private practice, he was employed as a physician surveyor for the Joint Commission and as a consultant for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia. In his spare time, Dr. Rowland enjoyed staying active and spending time with his dogs. From hunting to scuba diving in the Caribbean, he was always looking for the next big adventure. He had many hobbies including shooting, archery, and studying military history. In 2014 Dr. Rowland donated his collection of British Military Weapons to the Virginia Military Institute Museum.
Dr. Rowland’s family will receive friends at the Woody Funeral Home located at 1771 Parham Road, on Wednesday, August 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, August 6, at 11 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Richmond. His family would like to thank the administrators and staff at Lakewood Manor and his Visiting Angel Kaiza for the exceptional care they provided him.
