Helen Gunter Wilkins

Helen Gunter, 96, of Richmond, died August 20, 2011. She was the widow of Thomas Franklin Wilkins Sr. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister, A.K. Gunter Jr. and Meg Carson. She is survived by her son, Thomas F. Wilkins Jr. and his wife, Margaret; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Lucy Wilkins; three grandchildren, Karen W. Lynne and her husband, Andy, Rebecca W. Henderson and her husband, Douglas, and Jeffrey Thomas Wilkins and his wife, Carly; four great-grandchildren, Ethan and Lucy Lynne, Madeline and Sophie Henderson; one brother, William L. Gunter; two sisters, Hazel Sorrell and Effie Wright; also many nieces and nephews. Helen was a graduate of Barton College, formerly Atlantic Christian College and taught school in Williamston, N.C., before moving to Richmond. She was a longtime member of Seventh Street Christian Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Canterbury. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Seventh Street Christian Church Memorial Fund or to the Alzheimer's Association.
