

Born October 29, 1931, in Walstonburg, North Carolina and passed away peacefully in his home on September 29, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia. Henry Graduated from Walstonburg High School in 1949. Enlisted in the US Navy, served in the Korean Conflict, June 1950, honorably discharged in May 1954. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enrolled at East Carolina College (now ECU) in 1954 and graduated in 1958, earning a master’s degree in education and industrial arts. After a few free-lance jobs, he taught at Douglas Freeman High School beginning in 1959 for 33 years, specializing in drafting and woodworking. Henry was not just a teacher but was a friend and mentor to many students.
Henry was co-founder of the Richmond Animal League and volunteered for over 30 years. His love of all animals continued until he passed.
For all who knew him well, knew where they could find him; in his yard creating the perfect lawn. God’s wildlife was one of his other passions and he truly enjoyed all the species of birds that came to his feeder at the front window. Canoeing on the James River in Virginia and on the Tar River in Greenville, North Carolina was a special past time.
Survived by a loving wife, Leslie Wheeler for 32 years. Stepfather to six children, Steven Jancsics (Carolyn), Deborah Ward, Glenn Jancsics (Rachel), Timothy Jancsics, Gale Jancsics, and Grant Jancsics (Nicole). Sister- Doris Ward, nephews-John Ward (Julie), David Ward, James Ward (Valarie), stepbrother Bennie Wheeler (Cheri), stepsister Mary Willis, and thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at Woody’s Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd, Richmond, Virginia 23229, October 25, 2025, 1:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors afterwards at their home.
