

HARRIS, Hugh Sclater, 90, formerly of Richmond, passed away September 12, 2012. He was born March 10, 1922, in Albemarle County, Va. A 1943 graduate of VPI/ Virginia Tech, he proudly served his country in the WWII European Theater, achieving the rank of captain. He received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart and continued his service in the Korean War. Hugh retired from Southern States in 1985, after 38 years. He continued his commitment to agriculture working for Association Member Services of the U.S. and serving as executive secretary for the Virginia Council of Farm Cooperatives. He was predeceased by his parents, Fannie Sclater Harris and Hugh Ashby Harris; and his first wife, Mary Virginia Seward. He is survived by his wife, Almera Collier Harris; daughters, Shirley Sutton (Ken) of Virginia Beach, Sharon Soldan (Richard) of Richmond; stepdaughter, Cathie Galvin (Tom) of McGaheysville; and stepson, Jim Collier (Monique) of Blacksburg. He is also survived by granddaughter, Carrie Sutton; and grandson, Christopher Soldan, both of Richmond. Hugh's happiest times were spent fishing, hunting, working in his garden and watching Hokie football. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17 at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave., Richmond. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Cemetery.
