

STANLEY, James Daniel, Jr., 96, of Richmond, died November 7, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bessie Ruth Stanley; brother, Maury Stanley; and sister-in-law, Rose Stanley. Survivors include his wife of almost 76 years, Gladys B. Stanley; daughter, Pamela S. Marth (Brian); two sisters, Mildred Powell and Jean Ellen Hockaday; brother, Eldridge Stanley (Eula); two grandchildren, Christopher Scott Porter (Sarah) and Kristin P. Officer (Ray); and three great-grandchildren, Jack Porter, Olivia and Julia Officer. Mr. Stanley was a WWII veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. Major. He attended the University of Richmond. He retired from a management position at Philip Morris after 45 years of service. In addition to his career at PM-USA, he also sold real estate and was a tax preparer. In his earlier years, he was superintendent of the Sunday School Department at Ginter Park Baptist Church. He was also a deacon at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening. He could always be seen wearing one of his many color-coordinated hats ranging from his fedora, ushanka hat, ivy cap to his farmer’s straw hat. His remains rest at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Derbyshire Baptist Church.
