HOGAN, JANE HUNGATE, 86, of Henrico County, died on Sunday, October 30, 2016 after a brief stay in an assisted living facility. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty-six years, Kenneth, and three children: Larry, Suzie (Don) and Nancy. She is also survived by four granddaughters: Hillary, Teri (Dave), McKenzie (Mike) and Kendall, and by two beautiful great-grandchildren, Elliott and Ginny Leigh. Jane was born in Roanoke, Virginia and was the youngest of three children born to H.L. Hungate, Sr. and Gretchen Weddle Hungate. Her brothers predeceased her: William Elbert and H.L., Jr. She graduated in 1948 from Jefferson Senior High School and married her high school sweetheart, Ken, in 1950 just before he shipped out to Korea with the U.S. Marines. The young couple moved to Henrico in 1957 and raised their family in the county’s west end. In the days before there were “soccer moms”, Jane was a swim mom, a baseball mom, a ballet mom, a football mom, and a piano lesson mom. She most certainly held the record for the number of times she served as room mother! She was an accomplished pianist and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed summers at Avalon Recreation Assn. where her voice could always be heard above the others as she cheered on her children during swim meets. Jane and Ken shared many happy times and adventures with a close set of friends affectionately called “The Gang” - couples who partied at Avalon and at the beach at Sandbridge. Jane worked as a secretary in Roanoke, in Richmond and for her church, and she spent the last of her working years in the Journal Section of the Virginia House of Delegates. Jane and Ken lived in Caroline County, Virginia for several years where they raised Christmas trees and held a yearly pig roast. Jane was tireless in her devotion to her family, especially to her granddaughters, whom she loved dearly. Jane was warm, witty and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was one-of-a-kind and will be missed more than words can express. A memorial service will be held at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. on Friday, November 4, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of Richmond or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
