Burke, Jewell Lee, first child of Goldie and Park Kendall, passed away on May 23, 2012. Jewell Lee was born in West Virginia on an unseasonably warm winter day, the warmth of which infused her personality throughout her 88 years. Her childhood encompassed the Depression years, but even when times were tough, life was good. Jewell Lee's school terms were spent in the city, with Mom and Daddy, and little sister Peggy. There was plenty to keep a young girl busy outside of home life - playtime with friends, riding on the ice wagon or Saturdays at the movies, or riding her shiny black birthday bike. Home life in the city, along with summers in the country playing with Peggy, and best friend and cousin, Wanda, made West Virginia almost heaven. Summertime also meant visiting grandparents and multiple aunts and uncles; some days it was a visit to Grandpa Pauley's general store for candy and a soft drink, other times it was a visit to Grandpa Kendall's apple orchard.
Adult life brought a husband , 5 sons, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great-¬granddaughter; the years were busy for a Mom whose career was her family's well-being, their needs coming before her own. Jewell Lee's hobbies included painting, gardening, and playing bridge with long time friends from the University of Richmond. Jewell Lee was predeceased by her parents, husband Jack, daughter-in-taw Myra, and second husband William Brunot. Jewell Lee is survived by her sister, Peggy Fisher, and husband Harold, sons, Dr. Patrick Burke, and wife Glenda, Dr. Jack Burke, Jr., and wife Kimberly; Timothy Burke; Michael Burke; Christopher Burke, and wife Jacqueline; grandchildren, Geoffrey, and wife Dina; Kendall; Kelsey; and Katherine; and great-granddaughter Alexandra. Jewell Lee will be remembered by her family for her love and devotion and by her family and friends for her warmth.
The Burke Family will receive friends from 11 AM-Noon on Wednesday May 30, 2012 at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road, followed by a private burial. In-lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a contribution to the American Cancer Society or to your favorite charity.
