

Lola West Hilliard, 86, of Glen Allen, passed away peacefully in her sleep early on a beautiful Sabbath morning, September 29, 2013. She was predeceased by her parents, Clyde and Mabel West, sister, Lucille Murphy, and brother, Don West. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Norman L. Hilliard, daughter Cathy Hilliard Miles, her husband Caleb K. Miles, and daughter, Norma Hilliard Anderson. In addition, she is survived by a brother, Leon West, sisters Sylvia Clarke, and Joan Watanabe. She is also survived by three grandsons, Caleb H. Miles, Taylor Miles, and Andy Anderson. She also leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Lola was a graduate and valedictorian of White Oak High School in White Oak, NC. She attended nursing school at Carolina General Hospital School of Nursing in Wilson, NC, and then affiliated at MCV Hospitals in Richmond, VA. After graduation she was a private duty registered nurse at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond. She later worked as a company nurse at Home Beneficial Life Insurance. Before resuming her career at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, she raised her family and volunteered at various community and church functions. She provided many dedicated years of service to the hospital on the orthopedic and general medical and surgical floors before her retirement.
She was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the DAR, and a member of the Dames Club of the MCV School of Pharmacy. Lola was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, October 6th, at 2:00pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. As a 50 year breast cancer survivor, the family requests donations be made to the VCU Massey Cancer Center, PO Box 843042, Richmond, VA 23284; or Trinity United Methodist Church at 903 Forest Avenue in Henrico, VA 23229.
