Louise (nee DeVita) Verspohl, of Long Island, New York, left this earthly life on June 6, 2025, with her niece, Jenni, by her side. She was born on January 9, 1941, to Marie (nee Blaes) and Alfred DeVita. She was the younger sister of Denise (nee DeVita) Combs of Glen Allen, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Alfred, her daughters, Kristina and Renee, and her husband, Jerry. She is finally reunited with them, and the angels sing for them. She is survived by her sister, Denise, sister-in-law Evelyn, brother-in-law Ronny (Sue) nieces, Jenni (Stan), Barbara (Ronnie), Diane (Joe), Terri (Georg), Brigetta, Tracy, nephews Chris (Tammy), Greg (Jennifer), great nieces, Claire, Kristina (Ben), Katrina (Tucker), and Karli (Cole), Lisa (Alana) great nephews, Zach (Tonilee), Lucas (Jo), Peter, Chris (Claudia), and a host of great-great nieces and nephews.
She and Jerry grew up together and were high school sweethearts. They were married in 1966 and had many happy years together raising their two daughters in New York. Their house was the hub of activity while the girls were growing up, with so many friends spending the summer lounging by the pool.
Louise graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and was an extremely talented artist. She had many paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and forged sterling pieces. She loved telling stories about her favorite Professor, Kurt Matzdorf, who taught her how to create beautiful jewelry. She designed the tiara for her wedding, her bridal set, and Jerry's wedding band. Louise began her career as an elementary school art teacher and continued teaching until her children's birth.
Louise will long be remembered for her wit. She had a keen sense of humor and would quietly inject a funny phrase or joke into a conversation, bringing forth laughter from all who met her. Her sass and fierceness were the stuff of legends. She could quiet a room with a sharp look, but her heart was made of pure gold.
Her vast experience with plants and herbs was a treasure trove of knowledge lost too soon. She and Renee cultivated beautiful gardens full of fruits, vegetables, and stunning flowers. Her moniker was The Plant Lady. She lived and breathed the name.
Louise loved fiercely. She was loved by many and lost to dementia too soon. Her earthly family and friends will miss her, but all of us lucky enough to know her are so happy she is back with her husband and daughters.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home in Henrico, Virginia. Louise will be interred with her husband, Jerry, at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island at a later date.
