Dr. Miguel Angel Jimenez

Dr. Miguel Angel Jimenez, 99, died on December 14, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Olga de la Torre Jimenez; a daughter, Marie Henderson, her husband Bernard Henderson; a son, Dr. Michael Jimenez his wife Kristell Wright-Jimenez; grandchildren, Carrie Henderson Caumont her husband Darren Caumont, Angela Henderson Jones her husband Joshua Jones, and Michael Jimenez; and a great-grandson, Trainor Caumont. Dr. Jimenez was born in Matanzas, Cuba on October 2, 1912. He earned a teaching degree from the Normal School of Havana, bachelor degrees in chemistry and agricultural engineering from University of Havana, a master’s degree in food technology from University of California at Berkley, and a doctorate in food science and technology from the University of Massachusetts. He retired from Reynolds Metals Company, where he specialized in food packaging and preservation. He then served for many years as a consultant with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, speaking, teaching, and authoring publications principally for universities and governments in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. His professional associations include: A Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Chairman of the Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Chemistry. He received numerous awards, from those and other scientific organizations. For several decades, he was Editor of the IFT International Newsletter. His civic activities included serving for many years as an interpreter for Henrico and Richmond courts, and he was a mentor to Hispanic Immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship. He was a longtime active member of St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church, where a service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, December 19, 2011. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Richmond Food Bank in Dr. Jimenez’s memory.
