Last Thursday, February 25, 2016 this world lost a great American veteran, dentist, and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many with the passing of Stuart Froehling Wolff, 71 of Richmond, Virginia. Stuart passed away peacefully under the care of Sitter and Barfoot with his devoted family by his side. He was born in Alexandria, VA, on October 14, 1944 to Anne Froehling Wolff and Dr. Herbert DeGrange Wolff Junior. His love of hunting, fishing, animals and gardening came from his parents. He graduated from Saint Stephen’s Episcopal High School in Alexandria, went on to study at The University of Richmond, was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam. Stuart was assigned to be a paratrooper, but due to a severe combat shoulder injury upon arriving to Vietnam, he was switched to an RTO. Stuart earned many honors during his service, including the Purple Heart.
Upon returning from Vietnam, he graduated from New Mexico State University. During his studies he met his wife, Christine Hargrave, through mutual friends. They married in 1972. He started dental school at The Medical College of Virginia. While in dental school Stuart’s first daughter, Dori was born. After graduation, he decided to begin his private dental practice in Manakin Sabot, VA in 1977. There he established his life’s work in his fulfilling practice. Dr. Wolff involved himself in the community by helping young students in a variety of areas.
Through the following years, Ali and Courtney were born. With all three daughters, Stuart took the time to coach them on the soccer field. He also instilled in them an appreciation of wildlife as well as a love for adventure. He was a wonderful, supportive and involved father.
He became a member of the Catholic Church in 2009. Spending time with family and friends was Stuart’s passion and joy. His kind and selfless nature will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Stuart is survived by his wife of 43 years Christine Hargrave Wolff; and three daughters Dorian Wolff Ellsworth (Daniel); Ali Wolff Toole (Peter); Courtney Wolff Spence (Chase). “Grandpa Stu” will be lovingly remembered by his six grandkids, Danny, Lizzy, Abby, Jackson, Annie and soon to be Chase Junior.
The family wishes to thank all those who helped support Stuart during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease during the past five years, especially the staff at Sitter and Barfoot for their compassion and care.
