

Franklin, Walter Mayer III, 98, of Richmond, passed away on January 17, 2012. He was born on August 7, 1913 in Rosemont, PA, the son of Walter Mayer Franklin II and Elizabeth Pentz Franklin. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Wall White Franklin; and two brothers, Thomas Emlen Franklin of Culpeper, and Harry Banks French Franklin of Fredericksburg. He is survived by his daughter, Harriet Apperson Franklin; his son, Walter Mayer Franklin IV, daughter in law, Beverly Franklin; sister, Elizabeth Franklin Lurie; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Ashton Franklin. Mr. Franklin grew up in Plainfield, NJ, graduating from the Loomis School and Princeton University. After living in Westchester County, NY, and Louisville, KY, he and his family moved to Richmond in 1958. He served as Director of Electrical Market Sales for Reynolds Metals Company. After retiring, he became President of Atlas Fence Company. Throughout his life, he enjoyed many (largely self-taught) activities, including painting, photography, flying seaplanes, boating, fishing, playing various musical instruments, and following the hunt at Deep Run Hunt Club, where he was a member. He was also a member of the Jamestowne Society, Sons of the Revolution, The Virginia Yacht Club, The Commonwealth Club, and the Country Club of Virginia.
A funeral service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road on Thursday, January 19, at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors in the church library for one hour prior to the service. The family wishes to thank the staff of Cedarfield Healthcare for their kindness and care of both Mr. and Mrs. Franklin throughout their years of residence in the Cedarfield community.
