Winnie, known to family and friends as Mimmie, peacefully departed on the morning of September 18, 2013 at age 87. She was constantly surrounded by loving family and friends and never knew a stranger. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Winnie was the second child of Maurine and Kirby Kitterman. She spent her adult life in Richmond, Virginia, after moving here with her first husband, Johnny Colan. She returned to Kentucky often to visit with family and lifelong friends. In Richmond she raised her family with exceptional love, generosity, boundless energy, humor and wonderful food. Her descendants all inherited her joy of laughter and her affection for creating special meals for their loved ones.
She is survived by her adoring family; her son Jack Colan (Donna), her daughter Connie Chisholm (Bruce), seven grandchildren, RaineSalhab (Naji), WindiPerrow, Kimball Mapp (Jeff), Katelyn Chisholm, Carter Hathaway (Kevin), John Colan and Christopher Colan. Mimmie also enjoyed being entertained by her five great-grandchildren, Kadin, Ferran, Brantley, Nora, and Kieran. Also survived by two loving sisters, Margie Baltes and Betty Jo Tillman and was loved by three stepchildren, Rich, Bev and John and their extended familes. She was predeceased by her husband, Ed Foster, the love of her life. She was fortunate to have lifelong friendships which she nurtured for many decades both in Richmond and Louisville. Mimmie would tell you that the one thing she needed was “people”. She possessed a unique and special gift: her ability to put others at ease, giving anyone she met a sense that they were special. People of all ages treasured her spunk and passion for life and anyone she knew or even met loved her. Our family would like to recognize the wonderful caregivers who provided constant and loving support, especially Sara, Kim, Dr. Yanni and Aimee and the gentle hospice staff members from Bon Secours.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22 at Woody Funeral Home on Parham Road where a memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 23. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities or Make-A-Wish Foundation.
