Bobbie Jean Fairchild Self of Madison, MS, was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed peacefully from this life into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 22, 2021, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
She was born in Glenmora, LA on May 26, 1944, to the late Woodrow Hester Fairchild and Nila Gertrude Wiley Fairchild. She was a proud 1962 graduate of Pineville High School. Throughout high school, Bobbie was actively involved on campus. During her senior year, she was managing editor of the school newspaper, president of Pineville’s Future Homemakers of America chapter, class treasurer, and head cheerleader. Bobbie was also named 1962 Campus Queen, Typical Teenager, Most Vivacious, and Senior Best All-Round. Her classmates best described her as a genuine, happy, caring, and fun leader. She maintained her close friendships from PHS throughout her life.
Anyone who knew Bobbie can attest to the love and devotion she showed to her family. She was married to her husband, Lamar, for 58 years, and they enjoyed many travels and much laughter. She passed her love for cooking, baking, and reading to her children and grandchildren. She attempted to impart her love for tennis, as well, but no one in the family was quite as talented on the court as she was. Bobbie, lovingly known as “Mawmaw,” “Memaw,” or “Mamaw” by her grandchildren, always made sure to celebrate each member of her family, planning special parties, picking out the perfect gifts, and never forgetting to send sweet cards with cherished messages of love.
Bobbie’s life radiated the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She was a person of faith and lived her life loving and serving others. Her children and grandchildren recall her love for the Word. She found great joy in her early morning quiet time with the Lord.
Survivors include her husband Roy Lamar Self, Jr. of Madison, MS; sons Michael Lamar Self (Valerie) of St. Louis, MO, and Gregory Lynn Self (Elise) of Madison, MS; grandchildren Brandon Lamar Self (Emily) of Colorado Springs, CO, Chelsea Elizabeth Easter (Josh) of Arnold, MO, Mallory Kaitlyn Bell (Andy) of Madison, AL, Caden Michael Self of St. Louis, MO, and Annelise Townes Self of Madison, MS; great-grandchildren Noah and Bradley Bell, Adelaide Self, and Landon Easter. She is also survived by her sister Jackie Faye O’Donnell and brother William “Sonny” Fairchild (Montez).
The family would like to especially thank Ben Atkinson (FBC Madison) and Jason Smith (Pinelake Madison) for officiating and the staff of Mississippi Baptist Medical Center and Hospice Ministries for the loving care that Bobbie received.
Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS on Thursday, February 25, 2021, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will take place in the Parkway Funeral Home chapel at 11:00 AM, with a graveside service to follow at the Parkway Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation at P.O. Box 96280, Washington, DC 20077 or First Baptist Church Madison at 2100 Main Street, Madison, MS 39110.
