
He graduated from Coldwater High School and Mississippi State University. He was active in the oil and gas industry for forty years, with experience in drilling, exploration, production, oilfield construction and cross-country pipeline construction. He began his career in 1965 with Gulf Coast Drilling and Exploration. Subsequently, he was a major shareholder and served as Secretary -Treasurer of Triad Oil and Gas Co., Inc., at that time, the largest oil and gas operator east of the Mississippi River, with over 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Chalmas co-founded Clarkco Contractors, Inc. (1971), and Clarkco Services, Inc. (1988) serving as Secretary-Treasurer of both entities, and Clarkco Oilfield Services, Inc.(2007), for which he served as Vice-President and Chairman of the Board. He served on the South Central Water Association Board of Directors for several years.
He had many extracurricular interests including sailing and was actively involved with Arabian horses for many years. He owned and operated L – J Arabians ranch which activity included breeding, raising, training, showing and boarding the Arabian breed.
Chalmas is survived by his wife Susan Hamil Stinson, daughter, Stephanie Stinson, son, Brian (Belen) Stinson, sister, Judy (Stanley) Blair, brother, Billy (Patsy) Stinson, sister-in-law, Linda Stinson and two grand-daughters, Isabel and Olivia Stinson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Vida Marie “Dip” Stinson and father, C. R. “Tot” Stinson and youngest brother, Ricky Stinson.
A memorial service will be held at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at 4:00 pm. Visitation will be held prior starting at 1:00 pm.
