Charles was born on September 30, 1940 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Millard McKinley ‘Mack’ McGhee and Lillie Faye Hutchison McGhee. He grew up in McGehee, Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello from 1959-1963. In November 1963 he married the love of his life, Nancy McGhee, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In January 1964 Charles entered the US Army National Guard tour of active duty. Following, the couple moved to Jackson, Mississippi in March of 1966 where Charles began his 19 years of service with Deposit Guaranty National Bank. In 1995 Charles and his family relocated to McComb, Mississippi where Charles furthered his banking career as Executive Vice President of First Bank. Upon returning to Jackson, Charles spent the next 19 years with Trustmark National Bank, where he ultimately retired in 2010.
Charles will be dearly missed by his wife Nancy, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage next month on November 23. Charles also leaves behind his only daughter Shanon McGhee Brumfield, and son-in-law Jay Brumfield, grandson Parker Brumfield and two precious granddaughters, Ally and Bella Brumfield.
Throughout the years Charles was an active member of his church and considered his Catholic community one of the most important things of his life, often sharing his own personal motto that “you cannot wait until you need community to get involved”. In 1967-1985 he was an active parishioner of St. Therese Catholic Church, then St. Alphonsus of McComb where they lived for six years, and finally St. Richard in Jackson, which was home to him for the last 22 years. Charles was actively involved in several major movements in the Catholic Church such as Marriage Encounter, the Charismatic Renewal, Cursillo, and Small Faith Communities. He was also on the leadership team of R.C.I.A. for many years. He deeply loved the Eucharist and was a Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years. He was instrumental in starting a Catholic Men’s Group that met at his home every two weeks for the past 8 years (which was recently renamed Chick McGhee’s Group). He supported and encouraged countless people on their faith journey, and helped many to develop a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Charles is preceded in death by his son Dean Allen McGhee, his parents Millard McKinley McGhee and Lillie Faye McGhee, his brother Eugene Millard McGhee, and sister Helen McGhee Harris.
