Dorothy Ruth Haubein was born at home on June 10, 1920, in Meinert, Missouri, the oldest of 6 children born to George and Laura Haubein. After graduation from high school, she worked in her family’s general store before entering Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, Missouri in January, 1940. After graduation in 1942, Dorothy became a Red Cross nurse. She worked in the infirmary at Anheuser-Busch also. She was drafted into the U. S. Army in September 1943.
While in basic training in the fall of 1943 at Camp Crowder, Missouri, Dorothy met a young Army lieutenant, a dentist from Mississippi, who set his eyes on her at 3rd lunch. In January 1944, Dorothy joined the 106th Evacuation Hospital and served her country in England, France, Germany and Austria as the field hospital accompanied General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. After her honorable discharge with the rank of Captain in November 1945, Dorothy returned to Meinert. She told her brother Clovis that she was returning to her job at Anheuser-Busch, but that “she had met this boy from Mississippi, they were talking and if things worked out they were going to get married in the summer of 1946.” The young lieutenant, now Captain, Dr. John R. Cooper, Sr. and Dorothy were married on July 21, 1946. Dorothy moved to Pachuta in Clarke County, Mississippi with John and began a life that took them first to Newton, Mississippi and then New York City where John completed his orthodontic training at Columbia University. They returned to Meridian where John would practice and they would rear 5 children.
Dorothy was a homemaker and a longtime member of first Christ Lutheran Church and then Trinity Lutheran Church, Meridian. She moved to Jackson in 1999 following John’s death and joined Christ Lutheran Church.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 51 years, brothers Robert Haubein and Calvin Haubein, sisters Gladys Kanter and Evelyn Kollmeyer, sisters-in-law Joyce Haubein and Mae Haubein and brother-in-law Carl Kollmeyer. Those left to cherish her memory are her five children, John R. Cooper, Jr., M.D. (Marcia) of Houston, Texas, Nancy Cooper Stubblefield (Jim) of Dandridge, Tennessee, Virginia Cooper Farr (Rob) of Jackson, Mississippi, Edith Cooper of Jackson, Mississippi and Jane Cooper McNaughton (Jim) of Brentwood, Tennessee.
