

Gene Allen Smith, of Ridgeland, MS, passed away peacefully at home February 9, 2016, after an extended illness. His loving wife of 41 years was by his side. Gene was born December 13, 1950, in Jackson, MS, to James Alton Smith and Ruby Chapman Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Jackson Provine High School and Belhaven College, in Jackson. He worked for thirteen years as Business Manager and two years as Assistant Director for Finance at Jackson Hinds Library System. He retired from the library system in 2015. Gene also worked twenty-six years as Business Manager and Budget Manager for Beech Aerospace/Raytheon Aerospace/L-3 Communications Aerospace in Madison, MS.
Gene was a real sports enthusiast. He enjoyed being involved in little league baseball, football, and track meets at the various schools he attended. Sporting events remained an interest during his lifetime.
Gene was a longtime member of Broadmoor Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for thirty years. He was a devout Christian, who valued his personal relationship with God. Gene is known for always having a smile on his face. In his own words he said he enjoyed his life on earth, had great memories, and loved his wonderful wife so much. He believed that life's trials and pain served to build a stronger faith, and his personal faith never faltered, neither did his smile.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his father, James, and his sister Phyllis Smith Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara Holder Smith, his mother, Ruby, and his brothers, Ron (Genia), Dennis (Robin), and Eddie (Jenny). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12, 2016, with a private interment in Lakewood Memorial Park, Jackson, followed by a visitation at Broadmoor Baptist Church on Highland Colony Parkway from 10:00 to 11:00 am, with a memorial service in the chapel at 11:00 am.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Holland Addison, Dr. Guangzhi Qu, Dr. Eric Balfour, and the entire staff of St. Dominic Cancer Center and Jackson Oncology Associates for the compassionate care provided during the last year. The family also thanks the Broadmoor Baptist Church family for all their prayers, love, and support during this difficult journey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadmoor Baptist Church, or your favorite charity.
