Dr. Harry D. Burger, 1928-2022, loving husband of Janet (Dunbar) Burger; father of Mrs. Alice (Michael) Guerra of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Ms. Nancy Williams of Austintown, Ohio, and Dr. Eric (Tammy) Burger of Brandon, Mississippi. Grandfather to Alice’s children, Dr. Ashley (Dr. Eric) Mencarelli of Anderson, Ohio, and Ms. Nicole Betz of Denver, Colorado. Great grandfather to James, Charlotte and Jackson Mencarelli. Harry was preceded in death by his oldest daughter Edith Dunbar Burger.
Dr. Burger attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and then dental school at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He married the love of his life, Janet Cromwell Dunbar, in 1953. Following dental school he served as an officer in the United States Army, providing dental care to servicemen at the base in San Antonio, Texas and Fort Knox, Kentucky, where two of his children were born. Harry and Janet moved to Sandusky, Ohio to be near Lake Erie where he practiced dentistry for a couple of years before moving to Fremont, Ohio, where two more children were born. Harry’s love of Lake Erie drew him to northwest Ohio where he lived and boated for over sixty years.
Dr. Burger practiced dentistry for over fifty years in Fremont and was also the “floating dentist” on his boat, the Doc’s In, at Put in Bay Island on Lake Erie for almost fifteen years. Dr. Burger contributed much of his dental equipment from the boat to the historical museum at Put in Bay where it remains on display.
Harry’s interests were wide and included boating on Lake Erie, woodworking in his garage, attending his yard and trees, watching movies with Janet and collecting DVDs, making jewelry in his dental lab, and collecting coins, stamps, antiques and artwork. Harry was an avid reader on many subjects and collected books on the Lake Erie Islands and WWII. He loved America and his favorite vacation spot was Maui, Hawaii, where he and Janet spent a lot of time. Harry and Janet renewed their vows in Maui with family and friends to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Burger was a long time member of the Crews Nest at Put in Bay, the Sandusky Yacht Club, and the American Dental Association. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fremont.
