
Herbert Hoover Phillips 87, formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina passed away on July 9, 2017 at the Jackson Mississippi Veterans Home. He was born February 5, 1930 to Lester and Ola White (Phillips). After graduating from Charlotte Technical High School in 1949, he joined the United States Air Force and served as an Airborne Radio Operator and was a Korean War Veteran. After serving, he found employment in Waukesha, Wisconsin with Allis Chalmers (Siemens) Regulator Division. In 1969 he was transferred to Gadsden, Alabama with Siemens and then to Jackson, Mississippi in 1984. While living in Alabama, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Alabama in 1980 at the age of 50. He retired from Siemens in 1996 after 41 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Scopp Phillips, brothers Lester Phillips, Frankie Phillips, sisters, Catherine Dellinger, Mary Hargett, Lillie Denny, Virginia Bowers and Patricia Braznell.
He is survived by his son, Gregory (Leona) Phillips of Ridgeland, daughters Gina (Greg) Grace of Madison and Ginger (Todd) Lape of Madison and his grandchildren, Jennifer Frost Lee, Cameron Phillips, Ashlyn Myers, Ryan Myers, Jake Lape, Joshua Lape and Seth Lape.
During Herb’s high school football years, he was better known as Herbie (The Toe) for his extra point kicking ability. He received the Civitan Citizenship Cup award and served as a delegate for Charlotte, North Carolina Boys’ State. Herb was an avid golfer, enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching Alabama football, ROLL TIDE ROLL!
The graveside funeral services will be held at Parkway Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Veterans of Foreign Wars
