
A graduate of Central High School in Jackson, he served honorably in the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve and the Mississippi Air National Guard. While serving in the Air National Guard he was part of the 100th mission in support of Vietnam.
Jimmy spent over thirty years in law enforcement. He served on the Jackson Police Department for 21 years and retired as Deputy Chief of Police in 1988. After retirement from JPD, he went to work as an investigator for the Hind's County Sheriff's Office, the Hinds County District Attorney's Office, the Madison County Sheriff's Department, The Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Theft division, the Mississippi Gaming Commission, and Rankin-Madison County District Attorney's Office.
Jimmy loved life and people. The joys of Jimmy's life included his family and friends and life at their farm in Canton. He was also an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He loved Ole Miss football and fast-pitch softball.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Bobbye Jean Bowering and Laverne Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; son, Chad (Christie); grandson, Cole; sister, Brenda Luster (Jim); step daughters, Robin Thomas (Heath); Tricia Olive (Matt); step son, Evan Meeks; and many nieces and nephews.
Jimmy will be remembered as a sweet and loving husband, father and friend.
The family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 3301 S. Liberty St. Canton, MS 39046.
Visitation is Monday, February 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, February 8th at 10:00 a.m., prior to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on the Parkway in Ridgeland, MS.
