Jerry was born to Luther and Julia Pauline (Weathersby) Kelley in McComb, MS on February 6, 1943. She was their only child. When Jerry was young her family moved to Jackson, MS. She graduated from Provine High School in 1961.
Jerry married the love of her life, Wayne Preston Hughes, on August 17, 1962 at Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson. While Jerry had a few jobs through the years, she mainly assisted Wayne at their Dairy Queen on Terry Rd in South Jackson where they lived for most of their marriage. They spent their life supporting their three children’s interests and could always be found in the stands or audience cheering them on. Shortly before Wayne’s death, they moved to Brandon, MS where Jerry stayed until 2015, when she moved to Georgia to live with her daughter.
Jerry was an active member of Alta Woods Baptist Church for over 30 years. She met many of her lifelong friends there. Jerry was known to assist with weddings and showers for the young members of the church and was active in the church choir. Alta Woods was a big part of both her and Wayne’s life.
Jerry’s faith was evident in her life. She loved her Jesus and loved to tell others how great He is. She was an avid prayer warrior and encouraged many with her love for them and God.
Being an only child, she loved being a part of Wayne’s family and adored all of her extended family. Family, to her, was one of her most cherished things in this world.
