Madeline Louise “Kitty” Chaney Acy, 93, passed away surrounded by her family on June 29, 2024, in Canton, Mississippi. Born on January 19, 1931, in Livingston, Mississippi to William Osborne Chaney and Eunice Mearl Nicholson, both of Flora, Mississippi, Kitty grew up in Madison County and attended Canton Public Schools.
She met the love of her life, Howard Kenneth Acy, a sailor for the U.S. Navy and Mississippi native, when he was on leave visiting his brother in 1946. After a brief courtship, they married in 1947 and went on to have four daughters, Sandra Zadroga (Ron) of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Wanda Baldwin (Dick) and Sherrye La Cour (Leigh Brannon), both of Canton, Mississippi, and Teresa Watts, of Madison, Mississippi.
Kitty was a homemaker, seamstress, quilter, gardener, active church member, and excellent cook, even of fish, which she would never, ever eat. According to everyone who graced her table, she made the best fried chicken, banana bread, and blueberry cobbler in the whole of the South. She also had an uncanny ability to find four-leaf clovers wherever she went, much to the awe and amusement of her grandchildren. Known to her siblings as “Sister”, to her girls as “Mama”, and as “Nanny” (or “Nanny Goat”) to her grandchildren, Kitty was adored by all who were lucky enough to know her. Like a four-leaf clover, she was a rare and precious woman.
Predeceased by her husband, parents, and siblings, Kitty is survived by her four daughters, her eight grandchildren, Ken Hale (Lori), Dan Hale (Shea), Gabe Baldwin (Ashley), Jacob Baldwin (Laura), Erin La Cour (David Gauthier), Ian La Cour (Leslie), Alice Chaney Herndon (Drew), and Jay Watts (Bree), her sixteen great grandchildren, Gabrielle “Gabi” Beneveds (Zachary), River Hale, Chaney Hale, Rhett Hale, Mary Virginia Baldwin, Ann Parker Baldwin, Molly Baldwin, Emma James Baldwin, Olivia Baldwin, Grace Caroline Hazzlerigg, Bryce La Cour, Margaret Mae La Cour, Parker Herndon, Anderson Herndon, and Daven Watts, and her two great-great grandchildren, Madeline “Maddie” Beneveds and Elliott Beneveds.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to her son-in-law Dick Baldwin and the other numerous caregivers who tended to Kitty over the past several months. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Home on Highland Colony Parkway, immediately followed by funeral services. The burial will take place afterwards at Canton City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made to Center Terrace Baptist Church, 605 East Peace Street, Canton, Mississippi 39046.
