
Matt was born in Milstead, GA on September 9, 1928. He was the middle of five children to Sam and Eugenia Stewart. After graduation from Conyers Georgia High School, he attended Emory at Oxford for one year prior to enlisting in the Army. After seventeen months of service, attaining the rank of staff sergeant, he returned to Emory at Oxford. He later went on to Emory University in Atlanta and Emory School of Law., where he was a member of the Georgia Bar Association. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and active in Baseball and collegiate wrestling, winning a Georgia Association AAU Championship at 150 pounds. He retired from Traveler’s Insurance Company in 1990 after thirty-nine years of service in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Jackson. He served on the Board of Mississippi Guaranty Association, active in Keep Jackson beautiful and Toastmasters International. Matt was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving in various positions. He was a longstanding member of Colonial Country Club, where he enjoyed golf and friendship for many years. His lifelong love of travel took him to many foreign countries, but the best were the years of visiting the United States baseball stadiums with grandson, Timothy Martin. Matt was a quiet, soft spoken man of dignity and compassion. Surviving family members are wife Sue of 64 years, daughters Lynn Kent (Frank) of Lafayette, LA and Tracy Martin (Tim) of Ridgeland, MS, grandchildren Timothy and Melissa Martin, sisters Virginia Kilpatrick and Barbara Ann Finlayson of Conyers, GA, nieces Dr. Pamela Erdman (Don) of Stone Mountain, GA, Penny Robinson of Conyers, GA, several nieces and nephews, brother-in-law John Deming of Gulfport, MS.
