

Nita Cox Gunter, 69, peacefully passed away early Sunday morning, March 20, 2016 at Ridgeland Ministries Hospice in Ridgeland, MS. She was born on August 27, 1946 to Julia Lauderdale Cox and Doyle Turner Cox who, along with her older brother Larry Cox, precede her in Eternal Rest.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, James A. Gunter; children, Jeff Gunter and Jennifer Gunter; grandchildren, Tyler Pierce and Ashley Pierce; sister, Janice Robinson; and brothers, Rudy Cox and Tim Cox.
She was a statistician and administrator with the Mississippi State Department of Health and held the position of State Registrar for Vital Records of Mississippi from 1993-2001. She retired in 2001 with 33 years of service to the State of Mississippi, after which she worked part-time as consultant and projects leader for Vital Records.
Nita was an avid and lifelong reader and volunteered for various local library related activities and projects. She was, for many years, an active member of the Mississippi State Extension Services- Master Gardener's Association and enjoyed participating in their many public works projects.
She was liked and dearly loved by family, friends, and colleagues. Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home, 1161 Highland Colony Pkwy, Ridgeland, MS 39157, on Wednesday, March 23, from 6-8 PM and Thursday, March 24, from 10-11AM and followed by the funeral services held there at 11AM, March 24. There will be a graveside service held at Oak Lawn Memorial Park in Booneville, MS at 2PM on Friday, March 25.
