Norma Daliet Lewis

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church with a funeral service following at 2:00 pm.

Norma was born to Albert Norman and Janie Giles Daliet on August 22, 1923, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She was baptized at Main Street Baptist Church and was in Sunday School on the third floor when the church burned. She escaped safely, as did her mother’s fur stole, which she had borrowed for the day. When Norma found out that they danced at MYF, as opposed to BTU, she decided she might be a Methodist after all. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School at the outbreak of World War II. Hattiesburg was a good place for a young woman in 1941 –lots of dances and young men at Camp Shelby.

Norma worked at First National Bank in Hattiesburg and later in Jackson, where she followed her husband-to-be after the war. She married Ralph R. Lewis on April 11, 1948, and they lived in the Jackson area the rest of their lives. Ralph and Norma had two daughters, Martha and Susan, who were very fortunate to have had the best parents ever. Norma was a member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church for over seventy years and, among many other jobs, once led the junior high MYF, for which she deserved a large medal.

Norma was a dedicated bridge player and one of the smartest people we have ever known. She never, ever complained, even as she lost her hearing, her eyesight, and her ability to walk. She remained funny and loving every day of her life and we give thanks to God to have had her as our mother.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Mildred Smith of Charleston, SC. She is survived by her daughters, Martha (Bill) Roach, Madison, MS, and Susan (Robert) Meek, Brandon, MS, and her beloved grandson Matt Wray. She is also survived by sister Mary Gerhardt (Bob), Summerdale, AL, niece Jan Truesdale (Ray), Charleston, SC, and nephew Wayne (Betty) Smith, Greenville, SC.
