Susan Gail Pope, 63, died peacefully at home August 2, 2022, following a long struggle with cancer. She was born April 10, 1959, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS, the daughter of James Lloyd and Jonell (Roebuck) White.
Susan graduated from Jackson Preparatory High School, class of 1977. Following graduation, she attended Ole Miss, Mississippi College, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She spent her entire career in nursing, as a registered nurse, case manager and home health care nurse. In 2012, she married her childhood friend, Peter Pope. Susan’s death marked their 10th wedding anniversary.
She was predeceased by her parents James Lloyd and Jonell White and a brother Barry. She is survived by her husband Peter Pope of Madison, MS; son, Chris Helms of Naples, FL; brother, David F. White (Melissa) of Austin, TX; sister Kathy Mistal of Flowood, MS.; stepson, Van Pope (Kristen) of Madison; and stepdaughters Ashleigh Pope of Goldonna, LA, and JoAnna Pope of New York City.
Susan will be remembered for her extraordinary beauty, kindness, and humor—a winning combination with which she could light up any gathering. She was endlessly curious, always learning more about the world, herself, and God. She will be remembered for her strong, even stubborn, perseverance to do the next hard thing that needed to be done—whether vocational changes, working through conflict, or cancer treatment. She loved life and flourished in its gifts of good food, drink, friends, laughter, music, dogs, beaches, and the love of her husband. She was profoundly authentic, not impressed by station or status but by generosity and kindness. She counted among her friends, doctors, professors, farmers, hair stylists and house cleaners.
A service of remembrance and resurrection will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Parkway Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior.
Those who wish to remember Susan in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
