Virginia was the daughter of Dr. N.E. and Artemesia Burnham Coffield of Fountain, Florida. After the death of both parents at a very early age, Virginia was sent to West Virginia, Dr. Coffield’s former home, where she became the ward of Opal Straight Moore whom she came to love and admire. She credits Mrs. Moore as a wonderful example of a moral and ethical life well lived.
Mrs. Walker was a graduate of Lumberport, West Virginia H.S., the Union Protestant Hospital School of Nursing, and The West Virginia University. She was the first student in the Dept of Nursing to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Dr. William Glick Walker, her daughter Phyllis Pauley Cowan, Mrs. Opal Moore and her brother M.W. “Nick” Nixon.
Virginia is survived by nephews, Robert (Dale) and Wayne (Kay) Nixon and Lee Roy Hughes, III; nieces Hope Delong Hughes and Mary Lee Moore; great-nieces Hollis and Ashby Nixon and Mary Ann Moore and great-nephews Will Nixon and Leslie Moore.
