

Mack David Burkett, 74, of 41 Libby Hill Street, Martinsville, died Sunday, January 16, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Dante, Virginia on August 5, 1936 to the late Paul B. Burkett and Lydia Mae Etter Burkett. He served in the United States Navy and had worked for more than four years with Virginia Glass as a utility worker and later with T & R Properties as a custodian for six years. He was a member of First Assembly of God.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Mack D. Burkett, Jr., one sister, Augustine Flemming, four brothers, Garland Thomas Burkett, Paul June Burkett, Alford Lee Burkett and Ward “Jack” Burkett, one niece, Sandy Bush and two grandsons, Donald Summer and Kenneth Leon Hughes.
Surviving are his wife of thirty eight years, Lillie Estelle Burkett of the home, one daughter, Lydia Mae Burkett of Lynchburg, five sons, Kelly Eugene Burkett of Washington, NC., Joel J. Hughes of Ridgeway, Charles A. Hughes and David M. Hughes both of Martinsville and Harvey A. Hughes of Collinsville, one sister, Rev. Mattie Jane Collins of Bassett, ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in the Chapel of Community Funeral Service with Reverend Alvin Joe Nunley officiating. Interment will follow in the North Fork Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Leatherwood and full military honors provided by the Martinsville-Henry Co Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the chapel of community funeral Service and other times at the home.
