I had only met Arleen a handful of times. But I'd heard so much about her humor, giving heart, and her awesome cooking (her daughter Dee has the same skills!:). 
And although I did not know her as well as I would have liked... She was one of those people who you meet and feel right at home with. She had a way about her that was very familiar to me, I think she reminded me of my own mom, tias, and grandma. 
When we lose the people we love it is always so hard. But those who leave this earth before us never truly die, since they can live forever in our hearts and memories. 
To the Family, may your memories of Arleen comfort and keep you during this difficult time.

You did not have to be related to Arleen to feel like part of her family.  She was always wonderful to me and everyone around her.  And yes, her wisecracks kept us all laughing no matter what.  We will miss you Arleen.

My Nina was the best, beautiful inside and out.  The memories from camping, you and Mom cooking at Grandma Lola's every Sunday., the get togethers at your house in Riverside, the cabin in the mountains and let's not forget the Champagne in the snow during New Years.   Although you are gone from this earth you will always remain in my heart and will never be forgotten.  Love and God Bless.

Dear Great Grandma Arleen,

Thank you for loving me and for taking care of me.  I had so much fun laughing and playing with you!  You have a special place in my heart seeing as I was almost born at your house!  (What was my mom thinking?!)  Thanksgiving will always remind me and my mommy and daddy about you...and the look on your face when mommy said "my water broke".  I didn't think anything could phase you, but you should've seen how pale your face got! LOL  Although I'm only about 3 years old, I will always remember (because my mommy won't let me forget) my favorite saying of yours:

"NOBODY LOVES YOU BUT GRANDMA!"

Although I happen to be loved by many (wink wink), it is true that nobody loved me - or anyone else - like you did.

I think it's fair to say that everyone who knew you could say with certainty that "NOBODY LOVES YOU LIKE GRANDMA LOVES YOU!"

Grandma, I prayed last night that I would have a dream about you.  I forgot about my prayer until this morning when Ashlie called and told me about a dream Taylor had last night.  She dreamt she was at church with you and you "liked it". :)  You then offered to take our whole family to Disneyland and buy cotton candy!  I love how God is so REAL and how he answered my prayer in an unexpected way - through the eyes of a child.  After all, what place could be better to a child than Disneyland?!  I'm so thankful that you are in a place where "He will wipe every tear from your eye, where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain", but rather you are now in a place where "no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for YOU who love Him"!  You have always put yourself last and finally you get to be first!

If I had to choose one word to describe you it would be giving.  You always put others ahead of yourself.  I couldn't even tell you I liked something of yours because then you would make me take it! ;)  You never stopped serving.  For me, it took the form of cooking Mexican goodness, always remembering my birthday and other holidays, helping me pay the rent deposit for my house in college, "encouraging" me to be a good "Mexican" and go cook for my husband (still makes me laugh!), cleaning my clothes in the mountains, buying gifts, lending me your car for a summer, letting me and ALL my friends crash at your house for a weekend of snowboarding, and so many more things that I'm probably not even aware of.  Above all, you loved me unconditionally.  I always felt so special when you would sit next to me and play with my hair or rub my feet...even in your last days you did this for me.  I can't help but be reminded of Jesus washing his disciples' feet before his last day.  You gave more love than you'll ever know.  Thank you for setting the best example for us to live by and for giving us such cherished memories to hold dearly.  I will forever love you.

"Whom have I in heaven but you?  And earth has nothing I desire besides you.  My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

My heart goes out to all of the family and friends of this wonderful woman.  How very hard this loss must surely be.  Although I did not personally know Arleen,  her gracious spirit has been revealed through those who knew and loved her best.

I can't even begin to express what an amazing person you have always been. You were always thinking of ways to help other people. You were the most giving person that I know. Always putting others before yourself. Even through your battle with cancer you never complained. Not once. You were such an amazing strong person and I love you with all my heart.

So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. - 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Words cannot explain how much you mean to me Grandma. Thank you for always showing love and generosity to everyone you came across. I'm going to miss so many things about you but am very grateful for the years we had you with us. Until we meet again...

The things I am going to miss about Arleen....Her strength..wisdom...unconditional love...kindness....and her amazing sense of humor.  Everyone always knew they would be laughing around Arleen.  Even when she was very sick she would crack a joke and a good one too!  Arleen is a woman to be admired, a mentor as a human being.  She was always able to love and forgive so easily, a big loss to everyone especially her family.  Arleen will forever have a place in my heart..Love Sarah Silveira

My grandma was the most beautiful person inside and out. She was hilarious and always such a joy to be around. She was a strong woman and there was never a dull moment with her. She was the best grandmother that anyone could ask for and I couldn't be anymore proud to call her my grandma. She taught me so much and because of that I am so grateful to have had her in my life. I will truly miss her, but I know that she will always be with me and in my heart. One of my most cherished memories with her was when I was younger we used to make pumpkin pies from scratch together and it was always so much fun. I will really miss doing that with her but I was blessed to have had that time with her for as long as I did. I love you grandma.

I once heard that grief is the price we must pay for love. In the case of you Grandma, it is a price well worth paying. The years of love, good memories, humor, watching war movies together, and you making your delicious tostadas are amount a few things I will always remember you by. I love you more than words can try to say, and I will never forget the lessons you taught me through your selfless nature towards others. I will always work towards being a good man because of you and Grandpa, and the greatest gift you two gave me. My Mother. I love you Grandma. I will miss you until the time comes for us to meet again.

Grandma Arleen was - to me - happiness. A person of immeasurable kindness, beauty, and her exuberance in life was that of someone many years less. I always found her rather youthful in her personality, yet she held the class and fortitude of someone that everybody could not help but respect. She was unafraid to speak her mind which often was something unexpected and would typically lighten peoples thoughts and mood. I love her very much, will miss her greatly, and will be glad to see her again soon.

A beautiful woman inside and out. The Matriarch of her family and a pillar of strength. Witty, smart, caring, generous, enlightening and best of all endearing. These are all words that describe her soul. She left an impression on any one who has met her and did a wonderful job of raising a great family that I am blessed to have joined. Sometimes the Lord takes blessed people because they've filled their purpose early.....

To my beautiful mom.... Words can't express the emptiness I feel inside of my heart. Our lives will never be the same without you. I know that I will still pick up the phone every day automatically to give you a call to hear about your day and to tell you about mine. I could talk to you about everything and anything and I knew my secrets were safe with you. You always gave the best advice, even if I didn't always follow it. I hope I can be half the mother to my kids as you were to the 4 of us. You were the perfect mother, grandmother and great-grandmother....never making any of us feel any less loved or special than the other. You taught us so much about life...and even in the end....you taught us about death. How to leave this world with dignity and grace....to be thankful for every moment we spend together. Unconditional love, compassion, humor, kindness and honesty....those were your gifts and you gave them generously. Our dear cousin, John, told me that we should take comfort in knowing that your last breath on earth was your first breath in heaven.  So true! my mom was the most courageous woman i have ever known. She remained positive and courageous to the very end. She lived to witness two miracles Caden Alexander McBratney born June 14, 2011 and Jacob David Taggart born Sept.5, 2012. Mom & Dad blessed Brett & Diana  on there wedding day placing the traditional rosary around them. she refused to let cancer win.Mom danced a jig when Brian & Brett returned to the Los Angeles Police Dept. As the Boys would say L.A.s finest. Mom, thank you for being such a wonderful example to  our family and myself. We never heard you complain not once. I Love You Mom as far to the moon and back. Visiting my Grandma was always such a treat. Her house was always warm and she always cooked us amazing mexican food. I loved watching movies with her. She had tons of blankets and made sure everybody wasn't without one! Some of my all time favorite memories are with her. She used to watch over us when my parents went on work trips to Vegas. She took us to the Coca Cola factory and we thought it was the greatest thing ever! She would also give us endless quarters to use at the arcades. On Halloween she would come over and make Albondigas. I think the reason I love Halloween and Christmas so much is because of her. She passed it on to my mother, who then passed it on to me. She had endless love for her family and friends. My life won't be the same without her. I feel so blessed to have known such an amazing soul!

Arlene had always been so warm inviting and generous with me, even welcoming my dog when visiting and staying over... I will miss receiving her yearly Christmas cards. I have always admired her love, strength and compassion. May you be comforted with precious memories of your loving mom and grandma... Love, Sheryl and Eric

Grandma, I'm so thankful for having known you. You've taught me about so many things...love, selfless giving, caring for others, loving your neighbor as yourself, having a servant's heart, hard work, courage, and so much more. I'm going to miss your wit and hilarious sense of humor, the way you hum around the house, and the way you make everyone feel so loved. You were the pillar to an amazing family, and life will not be the same without you. You will be deeply missed but I'm so happy that you now get to meet Jesus face to face and begin an eternity with Him. I love you.

My grandmother was the most loving caring person ever who always had a great sense of humor. Whenever you needed help she was always there for you. Whether if you were struggling financially or you needed a place to stay she was always more than happy to help out. I loved how she addressed all of us as mijo or mija. You can never be at her house on an empty stomach or lay on the bed or couch without 50 blankets on top of you. She was very funny too even making jokes towards the end of her life.
Its very devastating knowing that shes no longer here with us, but at the same time I'm at peace knowing shes up there with Jesus, and also glad that we all got to come up over the weekend and say our last goodbyes and tell her we love her. I even saw her smile one last time. I love you Grandma.

 It's never easy to lose someone you love so much, and to see all your family sharing the same heartache you feel. My grandma Arleen was one of the most loving and warm people I have ever known. She always welcomed everyone, and treated all her friends like family. Her capacity for love was astounding - with so many grandkids and a handful of grandbabies now, she always made every single one of us feel so loved and never forgot a birthday or graduation. She loved to cook for all her "mijas and mijos," and always loved her house full of family. Those of you that knew her, know she was also funny and fiesty. She was one of the strongest people I've known, never complaining throughout her battle with cancer. She was the center of our family, and things won't be the same without her, but we can find comfort knowing that she is at rest. She is still alive in our hearts, and in our very being. I'm proud to carry her name as one of my middle names. I will never stop loving you Grandma Arleen, and will always be grateful for everything you've given us.
