I have so many wonderful memories of Glenda.  She was not only a colleague but a true friend.  She was a shoulder to cry on as my husband and I rode the rollercoaster of adoption and when we received the phone call that our daughter was on her way; it was to Glenda that I made my first phone call, after calling my parents.  Glenda showed me how to be a better teacher and was my guide through all of my growing pains.  One time we received money to build our classroom libraries, we went to the "Imagine That" (the children's bookstore).  I found some wordless books by Mercer Meyer; Glenda heard me giggling from across the store, we spent the next few minutes sitting on the floor, making up stories to go with the books and laughing.  I have so many memories I could share, but there isn't enough space to type them in, so I will close with: I will always hold Glenda in a special place in my heart.  Meghan and Cheryl my thoughts and prayers will always be with you and your families.

Glenda was one of those people that brought out the absolute best in anyone who happened to be lucky enough to be around her. It really is a rare find, someone who can bring joy to each and every day, even when the going gets rough. She always had a smile on her face, and an infectious positivity. Her spirit and smile is exactly what makes every memory I have of her kind of glowy, like it's lit by a candle, because Glenda had a natural brightness to her. 

One of our favorite stories that we regularly tell people, like a badge of honor that we are related via marriage  to this awesome woman, was when there were protests happening quite a few years ago,  and Glenda wanted nothing more than to be arrested and make a statement. She was so utterly disappointed not to be thrown in jail because think of how much that image could have brought to the cause?  

She is brave, selfless, inspiring, unforgettable, and lucky for the rest of us, passed these qualities on to her children and grandchildren, whom I am proud to call family.  Brian and I are beyond grateful to have had her be a part of our lives. 

I first met Glenda at Riverside City College in 1968. We were in the same sorority, Gamma Nu, where we shared so many fun and fantastic times.  She and Steve were an item and so in love even back then! I lost contact with so many people from Riverside, including Glenda, when I transferred to San Diego State and ended up living there for 20 years. My girls friend, Vicki Meadows(Dillon), also a Gamma Nu, just forwarded me Glenda’s obituary.  To all of Glenda’s family, my sincere condolences.

Dear Megan and Cheryl,

What an amazing person your mom was!  She will be missed by both of us and so many people!  Bill and I first met your mom when you (Megan) and Jeff were dating in high school.  She was bright, positive, articulate and devoted to Steve and you girls, as well as to her countless students.  But, through the years of knowing her, we have seen so much more of her character and personality- her humor, kindness, adventurous spirit, constant smile and keen interest in politics.  But, what stands out, above all else, was Glenda’s determination and her positive outlook on life.  If life gave her lemons, then she would indeed make lemonade!  Even when Glenda was confined to a wheelchair, like the “energizer bunny,” she just kept on going and going, always with a smile on her face and an optimistic viewpoint. 

Whenever we visited, we never heard her complain about her lot in life. Instead, Glenda was excited to hear about our latest adventures.  And, of course, all three of us would congratulate ourselves on having such wonderful grandchildren!

Glenda was so proud of you two girls, and she adored her three grandchildren, reveling in their accomplishments- from AJ’s first steps to Kathryn’s gymnastic feats, to Caden’s achievements in Science and Math.

It’s said that “memories are the timeless treasures of the heart”. May these treasures help to brighten any rough moments that you may encounter in the days and weeks ahead! All of us who have known Glenda have received wonderful lessons by her words and example. These lessons inspire us to be better people.

When we first met your mom and would always call her Mrs. Starr, the only way we remembered her name was to remember Glenda, the good witch. She was definitely beautiful and very good so the connection worked out well. Since we are like-minded politically, we had a lot to discuss online for many years. We miss her and are sending you lots of hugs and love. Abry’s fondest memories are of her entering a room and watching her smile light up the room.

I remember when your mom graciously allowed us to stay at her home before we sent the boys off to SpaceCamp together the next morning. It was a lovely evening, and she kept the conversation lively as we talked politics and weddings and boys heading off to their first sleep-away camp. 

I’m so sorry that she’s gone, and my virtual hugs go out to you until I can give you a proper one.

Your mom was one of the toughest people I have known, and I know some tough ones. She always had such a positive attitude even dealing with such an unforgiving disease. She even dealt with your dad!  Ha! Hope she is currently supervising him now😉

I didn’t know your mom all that well.  

However, I can say this, when I met with her those  few times I witnessed strength, compassion for others, and pure joy in the most difficult of personal situations. She was truly a beautiful person.

I had a dream a few weeks prior to December 30, 2019. It was a very vivid one where I was at someone’s home with a gathering of people, most of them I didn’t recognize. It appeared to be an event, a reception of some kind. Everyone seemed to know each other and Glenda but they didn’t notice her presence. She was walking around among them but not talking to anyone, only observing who was there. She looked happy but serious at the same time as though she was taking attendance (isn’t that just like a teacher?). Yes, I said she was walking around, full of vim and vigor, strong and robust of body without a care in the world. I remember thinking “It’s so good to see her so healthy and strong”. I wondered why no one was talking to her. Then my dream ended. 

Glenda was a friend who made me feel like family long before I was. I met her about 25 years ago when her daughter, Cheryl, and my son, Chris, were still in high school. Over the years we didn’t have a lot of contact, but on occasion she found opportunities to include me in their family activities like taking me along in their motor home to downtown Riverside to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July.

Soon our lives took on very different directions, seeing each other infrequently but life has a way of reuniting folks even when they’re not looking. I’m so glad it did, for I was able to participate in her joy when Cheryl and Chris were married after a 20 year long courtship. And soon she and I became grandmothers of the ever so adorable A.J., watching him growing, learning, and exploring the world.

What more can be said? Probably volumes, but I never knew a more loving, charming, kind, patient, compassionate, enthusiastic, tolerant, well-versed, considerate, insightful, soft-spoken, and at the same time a fierce force of nature to be reckoned with Woman. Lookout, Heaven, cause if you weren’t straightened out before you got there, you will be soon. Glenda, you were already a Starr and now its official. Welcome Home!


This isn’t the first time I get to use technology  in order to celebrate special moments with Aunt Glenda.  She celebrated with me first via Skype to be able to participate in my wedding  and I am honored to celebrate her life and legacy in the same manor now. She was an angel on earth and the most pure, kind hearted soul I have ever met. Although I am heart broken she is gone, I know she is with the love of her life watching down on all of us. 

I met Glenda while attending Ramona High School ’64 – ’67.  Our paths continued to cross as we joined the same sorority Gamma Nu while at Riverside Community College.  She and Steve definitely were life partners, since they were always by each other’s loving side.  I lost track of both of them until their oldest daughter married one of our closest friends, Bill & Sue Becker son Jeff.  Glenda & Steve have now finally reunited with each other.
