I am in PURE SHOCK and SADNESS. I have not seen John since we were friends in 78-80, he was finishing law school and expecting Jonathon. I had a conversation with him in '95 when I had recently returned to California. John was a GREAT guy and extremely intelligent. I just happened to type in his name on fb and then the State bar site and saw "deceased". I can't express enough dismay about reading this news. My heart goes out to the entire family.

I had no idea John has passed until an old Law enforcement friend of our family had mentioned it to us. After spending almost eighteen months consulting with John on a work related project that he took interest in when my father contacted him back in 2000, I found John to be passionate for what he does- an attempt to reveal truth.  I am confident that the words that John heard when he reached Heaven was, "Well done good and faithful servant.  Enter." From the whole Christian family, our prayers are with you Ruiz family, and may God continue to keep you in His perfect peace and grace.

John, You will be greatly missed. We had the pleasure and honor of working with you in the D.A.s office for many years. You had a great sense of humor and, I can still hear your funny quotes. You where one of the best of the best in Prosecutors, You helped remove the worst of the worst people off the streets and, you helped so many victims and their families find peace, we pray that you and, your family will also find peace. Now you are in God's kingdom. Rest with God's love in enternal peace.

Although John and I were often on opposite sides, I knew I was dealing with one of the most intelligent, tough but fair, individuals I have known. John is an example for all who inspire to be great lawyers. His intelligence and compassion to all was a common trait John displayed. John my friend, you shall always be in my thoughts and prayers. I never had the pleasure of meeting John Ruiz in person, but I did get to know him through the many years of sharing family stories with his mother –my friend-- Nina Angeloni. I noticed that the condolences and memories from those who truly knew and loved John, mirrored his mothers loving memories of John as a happy, loving child; a studious, friendly and responsible college student; and finally… the man everyone knew to be a generous, loyal, patient and an approachable human being with a remarkable career. One can easily see how John’s inherent character combined with his many achievements, became a man of substance. John, may you now rest in peace.

To whom much is given, much is required and all things come with a price.  My cousin was a devoted, heart felt District Attorney who served the public and put his own needs aside to continue the good fight of faith, justice and restitution for the families of the victims he served.  In the plight of his servitude, he was affected by the evilness he dealt with, day in and out.   He, as all  civil servants interacting with the public, need to have their cups filled constantly in order to continue the good fight.  Ultimately, it is not our fight, but the Lord Jesus Christ's plight, who deals with spiritual wickedness in high places and sees all things; And who makes all things right in his time, as he says, "I see all things, and I a shall repay."   May John, who had such an tender and huge heart,  a true lover of humanity, compelled to stand for justice, now find his own peace, justice and God's eternal salvation.  May we, the family, have hope in Christ, that we will see John again, the second time, in heavenly glory!  To realize and acknowledge that this is just a short temporal break to eternity, which is forever, and there we shall all fellowship and commune with John, the Father, his son and all our loved ones that have gone before us, forever!  Yes, we have pain and sorrow  now, but to know what lies ahead, is what is our promise and hope in Jesus Christ!

John, thank you for always giving so much of yourself to others.  I will always be grateful for and remember you as the senior DDA who took so much time out of his schedule to come watch me in and guide me through my first trial.  I will always be indebted to you.

I met John when I was dating his best friend, now my ex-spouse.  I remember the fun times gathering with his huge family throughout the years, all the food, laughter, and love, thanks Aunt Vanina!  He will be truly missed.  I pray for comfort during this grieving time.  He will never be forgotten.  John may you rest in peace!

John and I were officemates and friends when we started together in the DA's office back in the early 80's.  We kept in touch over the years after I joined the Humboldt DA and then in private practice. John was a great lawyer and a trusted friend. Great memories of good times brought me smiles at a time of sadness.  Rest in peace...

John showed me so much kindness when I first joined the office.  I knew only two people here but John always stopped to say hello and shared many great stories with me.  He was a generous and trustworthy colleague.  The office is a lesser place without him.

I met John in 2009 when I joined the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.  I knew only two people here and felt very much like an outsider.  I was fortunate to be assigned an office on his floor.  John introduced himself to me and offered me help adjusting to a new work environment.  He always took the time to say hello and share a story even though he was so busy in his own assignment.  He was a kind and generous man, a devoted husband, and a trustworthy colleague.  The office would be a better place if there were more people like John.  I will remember him always.

The world is a lesser place without John, though heaven has opened it's gates in welcome to such a wonderful man. I am  honored to have had the opportunity to see John's smile and hear him laugh. He touched my life and many others in such a positive way. 

We miss you John. We love you and promise to look after JoDee as we know you would want. God bless you and your family.

John was a great prosecutor, mentor and friend to many at the district attorney's office. For over a quarter of a century, John served the citizens of Riverside County with great honor. For those that worked in the Perris Court, we will never forget John's leadership and, of course, his roaring laughter as we ended each week with a competitive game of "Frogger."  John will be greatly missed. His commitment to justice and to service will never be forgotten. I pray that his family will find comfort in knowing that John was much loved and greatly admired. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

You know in my heart how I fill, just a few weeks ago you told me that you know how much I Love You. I get comfort knowing that. I will truly miss you. I promise you I will be there for my sister and Jonathan.

There are few people who have walked into my life and left such a lasting impression. John was my friend and mentor and I will miss him dearly.  He taught me that life is short, and the most important part of life is the people in it.  I will be grateful for his teachings forever.

I was fortunate enough to know John and call him my friend. I first met John when he was in a whirlwind of homicide trials in the summer of 2005, and immediately appreciated his ability to command the courtroom. I remember that when I introduced myself to him outside the courthouse I called him â€œMr. Ruizâ€. He smiled, stuck out his hand and warmly said â€œCall me Johnâ€. It was at that instant that I saw John as a real person and not as the fierce advocate he was in court. I was so excited to join the office and I literally told my fiancÃ© that night that I had met the prosecutor that I would hope to someday emulate ( I even remember telling her â€œThat's the guy I told you about!â€ when he received an award at the DA picnic that year) 
Things in the office moved quickly and I had my first juvenile gang case a year later. The first person I called was John and he took the time to walk me thorough the law on gangs. Everything I learned about prosecuting gang members came form John. He was generous with his time and never turned me away. After a couple of years our relationship grew and John became someone I could confide in on issues inside and outside the courtroom. John was so much more than a mentor. John was a true friend. He and I spoke about everything from work to social life. I will remember John every time I see a great film (John was a huge movie buff) or hear a great closing argument. I will forever compare myself to him and strive to be the prosecutor he was. John's legacy will live on in our office through me and every attorney he touched. I hope that can give back to others the way that John so graciously gave to all those who sought his advice. I am going to miss my friend, but his legacy will not fade.

John, as the oldest cousin in our family - we all looked up to you.  You were always seen as confident and smart.  You are admired for your love of family and the amazing work you did to make the world a better place.

Dear Ruiz Family, I met John about a year ago as a newer DDA.  I had a legal issue I had not come across before in misdemeanor court.  I stopped John in the hallway and asked for his advice.  He invited me into his office, printed the relevant law, and explained the procedure to me.  He never hesitated to thoroughly explain any legal issues on a moment's notice.  John will truly be missed.  RIP John.

I met John the year we graduated high school.  His goal was to get his law degree and become a prosecutor.  He always wanted to make a difference in his community and he accomplished that.   One of his happiest days I can remember was when he started working with the Riverside District Attorney Office.  He loved his job, his cases, and his co-workers.  He thrived on the challenges of every case and felt the sorrow of the victims families.   John gave me the greatest give of my life, our son Jonathan.  He instilled the same values in him and I could not be more proud.  John was truly a great man and will be forever remembered by all that knew and loved him.  He will always have a special place in my heart.

I had the pleasure of working in the same office with John the last 3 and half years and he was always pleasant, informative and insightful.  As a young DA many of us walk up and down the hallways in search of answers and guidance and John was always willing to provide that.  He will be missed, my condolences to his family and loved ones.

John-- I worked with you for almost 20 years and we often were working on the same type of cases at the same time.  You and I often bounced ideas and possible dispositions off each other and I appreciated the fact that your heart was always in the right place and we could have open discussions. I miss your wisdom and common sense. I hope that you and your family can find peace in this most trying of times.

john was a giving soul; pure in spirit and able to spread those qualities throughout anyone who met him.  I am thankful I was allowed to meet and spend time with you.
