Machelle Jennifer Sanders, a star that fell from heaven into the arms of those who loved her, was called home to be with the Lord on March 7, 2026. A brighter light will never be known by those she leaves behind.
Machelle was born on June 9, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Manuel Ortega and Fontelle Huntsman. From an early age, she demonstrated remarkable strength—once serving as a poster child for polio through the March of Dimes, and throughout her life, a true symbol of resilience. No matter how many challenges she faced, Machelle met each one with determination, turning obstacles into stepping stones and never backing down.
She was known for her adventurous spirit, quick wit, and warm personality. Machelle had a gift for conversation and connection—she could walk into a room full of strangers and leave knowing their stories, often filling the space with laughter along the way.
Machelle shared a deep and abiding love with her husband, Jay Sanders, whom she married on October 6, 1979, in Midvale, Utah. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, leaning on their Savior, Jesus Christ, in all things. She cherished his quiet strength and steadfast love.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—spending time with family, camping in their travel trailer, sharing wine tasting trips with dear friends, and embracing new experiences with enthusiasm.
Machelle attended Bingham High School and Salt Lake Business College and was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sandy, Utah.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jay Sanders; her children, Jay Bassett ( Dyana), Janette Craig ( Robbie), and Jason Sanders ( Amanda); one granddaughter, four grandsons, and two great-grandsons; and her sisters, Colleen Hanson, Tina Horsley ( Rod), Sherry Allen ( Bill), and Kathleen Hamilton ( Burley).
She was preceded in death by her sons, Jeff Bassett, Troy Bassett, and her brother, Richard Rossi.
Funeral services will be held on March 28 at 12:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 1815 East 9000 South, Sandy, Utah. A celebration of life will follow on June 6 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Albion Village Clubhouse, 160 Albion Village Way, Sandy, Ut.
Machelle will be remembered for her strength, her laughter, her faith, and the light she brought into the lives of everyone she met.
