

Alex was born in Colón, Panama on November 28, 1948 to Apin Chong and Chong Yung Yuk Lan. He attended Cristobal High School in Canal Zone Coco Solo, Panama where he graduated as Valedictorian in 1968. After graduation, he came to the United States to attend Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, hosted by the family of Lemuel and Anne Marie von Leer.
In 1972, after graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering, he married Lemuel and Anne Marie’s eldest daughter, Sarah. The couple moved to Pottstown, PA where they raised their two children. Alex worked for a number of companies as a lead hardware designer and later a manager, ultimately retiring from L3 Communications.
Residing in Pottstown, PA in his retirement, Alex was a devout parishioner of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister and member of their Vocation’s Ministry. Alex was active beyond his years, often hiking and kayaking in local forests and waterways. He was also an avid and excellent cook.
Alex regularly visited his children and their families in Florida to play board games, share meals, and spend hours in the sand with his grandchildren on the beach.
Alex is lovingly survived by his children, Angelina Wheeler-Chong and her husband Benjamin Wheeler-Chong, and Alexander Michael Chong and his wife Wanida Chong; his grandchildren, Noah Wheeler-Chong, Maya Wheeler-Chong, Linus Chong, Legend Chong, and Maisy Chong; and his siblings, Alicia Denney and Alberto Chong. Alex was predeceased by his brother, Apin Chong Jr.
The family will hold a public visitation on April 15, 2023, from 9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. in the Gathering Center of Saint Aloysius Church, 223 Beech St., Pottstown, PA 19464, followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alex’s memory to Saint Aloysius Church.
