84 years old, born December 27, 1930, went home to be with the Lord on May 7, 2015.
Joyce was born in the small community of Metter, GA, and was daughter to Thirza Vastie Taylor and Otis Lee Mixon. She was raised in Columbus, GA and married her husband, Jimmy Doyle Allison, on August 13, 1949. Joyce and Jimmy moved their growing family to Titusville, FL in 1960 joining many other young families leading America and the world in the race to space. The Space Coast became her permanent home for the remainder of her life. Joyce was an early member of the NASA Wives support group and became a successful and respected realtor during the 1980's and 1990's. She lived a long and productive life, working into her late seventies as a managing supervisor for product demonstrators in Publix grocery stores throughout Brevard County, FL. In the early 1970's she and other Titusville families fought long and hard to get Astronaut High School built and were given the honor of helping decide on the War Eagle mascot. She loved college football as her husband and three sons each played at Auburn, Memphis State, Alabama and Georgie Tech.
She relished travelling with her family across America and later to Europe. She was affectionately known as "Mamaw" to her grandchildren and “Aunt Joyce” to over one hundred nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was known for her kind words for everyone and will be remembered as the kind of person who left you with a smile on your face. Her support of her children was limitless and will be her legacy.
Joyce is survived by her husband Jimmy; her four children, Laura DeBerard, Mark (Chris), Scott (Ellen) and Brian (Adele); her eight grandchildren, Kimberly Allison, Matthew Allison, Caitlin Allison, Philip DeBerard, Allison DeBerard, David DeBerard, Taylor Allison and Hayden Allison; her sisters, Dean Johnston and Judy Parmer. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother Henon Mixon.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday May 18, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial.
