She was born on November 17, 1923, in Tomah, WI., youngest daughter of the late Gus and Lena (Herbst) Gerke. Arlene was a graduate of Tomah High School and worked in Milwaukee, WI as an administrative assistant. In 1945 she married Cleo Kube a career United States Naval Officer and spent the next 30 years as a Navy wife living at various duty stations around the United States, including Pensacola, Bethesda, and Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Additional overseas tours included Newfoundland and Puerto Rico. In retirement they settled in Satellite Beach, Florida where she continued to be an active community member. Arlene sang in the choir at the Patrick AFB Seaside Chapel, eventually joining the congregation at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Indialantic, FL., where she volunteered as a secretary for many years.
Throughout her life, Arlene was involved in many community activities and charities. She worked for the American Red Cross while at Patuxent River and continued her service as a volunteer in Satellite Beach. She especially enjoyed her family and network of friends hosting gatherings at her home and pool.
Favorite activities included gardening in her yard, swimming, cooking, baking, making the best brownies and chocolate chip cookies, all leading to her writing a cookbook of her favorite recipes for her family. Her annual Christmas Letters were legendary, leaving a yearly archival history covering generations. She enjoyed traveling to visit extended family, her children, grand and great grandchildren taking her from the Pacific to the Atlantic visiting the Hawaiian Islands and England. She was a loyal friend, had a generous heart, and was ageless and active until her passing. She was one of a kind.
In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Cleo Joseph Kube, Lt. Cdr., U.S. Navy, Retired who passed away on September 23, 2006, five siblings (Francis, Wallace, Ruth, Donald, and Marvin), an infant son, Michael, who passed away in 1949, a daughter-in-law Ellen, and two grandchildren Damien and Adrienne.
