Bob was born mentally handicapped, and is on the mental level of a 4-5 year old. Bob Verity lived with his family in Sycamore, IL, until the age of 8. During this time he and his younger brother, Jim, were very close, spending hours playing together. At the age of 8, Bob was placed in a special boarding school for the mentally handicapped, located in Chicago, IL, and he would come home for occasional weekend visits.
At the age of 10 Bob was removed from the boarding school because his parents discovered that he was being mistreated. He returned back home to live. At age 12 Bob and his family moved to Marion, Ind., and then at age 15 they moved to Richmond, Ind. It was at this age that Bob was then placed in a special school for the Mentally Handicapped, located in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Here Bob totally enjoyed his new boarding school, where he was well cared for and had loads of friend and social activities.
When Bob was 18 his family moved to Winter Park, FL. He stayed behind in his Ft. Wayne boarding school and was looked after by his Grandmother, who lived in Marion, Ind. Then, at the age of 22, after his family moved to Indian Harbor Beach, Fl., Bob and his Grandmother left Indian to live with his family. And, at age 25, Bob was placed in “Springwood Estates,” a group home in Rockledge, Fl. He attended classes and worked at Bridges, a nearby sheltered workshop. Bob totally enjoyed living in his group home, where he was well cared for and kept busy with both work and social activities. In fact it was difficult to pull him away from his Group home for weekend visits. Bob enjoyed attending Friday night dances, and Saturdays held Special Olympics practice sessions or events. Sundays they attended services at a nearby church. On holiday breaks Bob would come home or visit at his Brother, where Jim would take him out on fishing trips and to UCF football games, which included tailgate parties with loads of food. With his Father, Bob always enjoyed going on cruises.
People who knew Bob know that his number one interest is food. Bob was totally in heaven at any food buffet or any family gathering that included endless food. His foods of passion were shrimp and carrot cake. His other big passions were with building elaborate doll houses out of cut up pieces of paper and scotch tape, riding his bike, participating in various Special Olympics events, attending dances, going to church, building model cars, listening to country music, and looking at cars, especially Mustang convertibles. His Father or his Brother commonly took him to car dealerships and car shows. There was a time when Bob could be shown a taillight lens or a car bumper and he’d be able to give you the year, make and model of the car. Every Halloween Bob would dress up as a Mustang car. to car dealerships and car shows. Perhaps the biggest thing Bob will be remembered for is that he was always so easy going. It would be totally out of character for Bob to complain about anything. At work, during activities, at home, and even during stays at the hospital, everyone would comment about what a pleasure it was to be with Bob. Bob was a person who was just happy to be around others and would always accept whatever came his way with a positive attitude.

A memorial service is planned on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 2:00pm in the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US highway 1, Rockledge, FL.
