He was born April 11, 1925 in Columbia, SC to John and Ellen (West) Littlejohn. He leaves his daughter and his son-in-law, Gailyn and Dennis Stricklin; granddaughter Kim Rubey and her husband Mike; grandson Roland Hillier Jr. and his fiancé Sandy Means; granddaughter Megan Erber and her husband Gunnar and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Betty W. Littlejohn, his loving wife of 70 years in addition to 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
Don had a long and successful career in the United State Air Force. He began his military service in 1944 as a B-17 pilot in command at the age of 19 during World War II. He also served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired in 1971 in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Don will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. His family was the most important thing in his life along with his little dog Penny who he often jokingly referred to as “just an old hound dog”. He was always there for those he loved no matter the circumstances and willing to do whatever was necessary to help them. He was a strong-willed and independent man who did things in his own way and in his own time. His favorite saying was “Don’t sweat the small stuff”, a motto that he lived by pretty much every day of his adult life. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the administrators and staff at Zon Beachside Assisted Living for their kindness and wonderful care that they gave him during his stay. They went out of their way to make him feel at home. We are also grateful to VITAS Healthcare for their support and care over the last several months and last but not least to Phyllis Brockel and Maria Brockel who were his caregivers at home before he moved to assisted living. He was blessed to have had them in his life and we are so thankful for their love and support.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at the Florida Memorial Gardens Life Event Center, 5950 S. US Highway 1 in Rockledge, Florida. A military honors ceremony will be held at 2:30 pm after the visitation to be followed by entombment in Florida Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity in his memory would be greatly appreciated.
