Doris Jane, as she was known to her friends, was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Edward C. Graeber and Dorothy Cobun Graeber. Her family included two sons, Thomas E. Hawley and his wife, Faith, of Lorton, Virginia; William A. Hawley and his wife Carol, of Norcross, Georgia; by four grandchildren, Joshua, Dana, Alan and William; and three great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert E. Graeber, and his wife, Marlene of Bridgeport, West Virginia, and their sons, her nephews, Alan, Mark and Steven Graeber.
An alumna of West Virginia University, where she met her husband, the lively and vivacious Mrs. Hawley enjoyed their life together in the Army, coping with the many sudden moves required, acquiring many new friends, and bringing up and educating two sons in the process.
Doris Hawley, a resident of the Indian River Colony Club, had many friends there and prized every moment spent in company with them. She loved bridge, flowers, books, her cat, Mr. Blue, and being helpful to friends. But most of all, Doris Hawley loved her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and in this Daughter of the American Revolution, the intense flame of patriotism never flickered.
Her family and friends will miss her friendly smile, her energy, her helpfulness, her sense of style, her organizing ability, her let’s-get-it-done attitude, and the ready wit she brought to every occasion.
A celebration of Doris Jane’s life will be held at the At-Ease Club, Indian River Colony Club on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 11:00am. Final interment with her husband, Bill, will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
