He was born on April 26, 1930, in New Bloomfield, Missouri, to Henry Monroe Jones and Abigail Mae Jones. As a young man, he worked summers on the Missouri railroad and at a brick plant before joining the United States Air Force in October 1950.
While stationed in Arizona early in his military career, Herb took leave to return home and marry his high school and church sweetheart, Doris Elaine Hickman, in January 1953. Together, they traveled the world with the USAF and became proud parents to Patricia Elaine, Sarah Denice, and Gregory Clayton. After 20 years of service, Herb’s final duty station brought them to Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, where they chose to make their permanent home.
In 1967, Herb and Doris joined First Baptist Church of Indialantic, where Herb faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, usher, deacon, and his most cherished role—greeter and "hug dispenser." Doris, too, was deeply involved in church life, including missions work, Vacation Bible School, and wedding coordination—which somehow always involved Herbert.
After retiring from the Air Force, Herb began a second career with Florida TV Cable, mastering the then-cutting-edge technology of microwave link networks. He worked at the antenna and microwave receiving station, ensuring families could enjoy their favorite TV shows. He retired again after 26 years of service with the cable company.
In 1996, after nearly 44 years of marriage, Herb lost Doris following her long and courageous battle with cancer. He lovingly cared for her throughout her illness, exemplifying his deep devotion and kindness.
Herb found great joy in his family, traveling, serving at church, attending gospel concerts, revivals, and Baptist Conventions. After nearly 16 years as a widower, he met Rebecca Stabb, a vivacious and charming widow. Their connection was immediate, and they soon married, beginning a joyful chapter filled with shared adventures. Through Becky, Herb gained even more people to love—her children, Steve Staab (Vicki) and Stephanie Tatum (Bob), along with three grandchildren who warmly welcomed him into their lives.
Over the next 12 years, Herb and Becky explored the world together—by cruise, plane, and car—before eventually settling into a retirement home, where they embraced the quieter pleasures of life: game shows, mysteries, ballgames, and the comfort of one another’s presence. Becky passed away in June 2025.
Herb is survived by his children: Patricia Werle (Scott), Sarah Nichols (Ed), and Gregory Jones (Kristine); his grandchildren: Shannon, Amy (Wade), Evan, Collin (Erica), Indiana, Jonah, and Andrew; and his great-grandchildren: Rosalie, Micah, Josiah, Keegan, Titus, Judith, and Lydia. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson Clayton, who now welcomes him into Heaven.
Herbert Jones was a man of unwavering faith who loved the Lord and lived out that love in his actions. He was devoted to his family, generous with hugs and kind words, and always ready to share the grace of God. He served his country with honor and lived his life with integrity, humility, and joy. He was truly a good loving man and will be missed beyond measure.
