He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret (Peggy), four children – John, Jr., Deb, Chuck, and Rob, eight grandchildren – Lauren, Kristina, Jacqueline, Patrick, Andrew, Christopher, Caroline, and Parker, and two adoring dogs – Lance and Corey. He is also survived by an extended family that includes his sister Ann, sister-in-law Marilyn, sister-in-law Nancy, cousins Ronnie, Shelly, and Mike, and each of their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Rolland and Dorotha McKinney, and brother, Gene. McKinney lived his life in the pursuit of learning and service to his family.
He earned multiple bachelor, graduate, and doctorate degrees from the University of Florida and taught as a professor in the Linder College of Business at the University of Cincinnati for nearly 30 years. At UC, he was instrumental in founding the Women’s Soccer Club in 1979, which became a varsity sport and competed at the AIAW National Championship Tournament in its 3rd year, where his daughter Deb was named a 1st Team NSCAA All American player.
Even in retirement, he sought new experiences and knowledge. His love of family was demonstrated frequently as his guidance was sought by family and friends both near and far. Since moving to Viera, FL in 2007, McKinney enjoyed golf, bridge, and the sunny days of retirement with frequent visits from his children and grandchildren.
