Our dear sweet Mimi entered into heaven on Monday, May 19, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She remained gracious at all times, thanks to the loving caregiving of her family and friends.
Norma Lois Sharp was born August 13, 1931 in Claremont, New Hampshire to Charles and Elsie Sharp. She was always the most beautiful girl in the room, but her true beauty lived within her kind and generous heart.
She was crowned Queen of Methuen High in 1949- an honor she cherished.
Norma worked for several years at Champion Paper Co. and New England Tel and Tel before marrying the love of her life, Capt. George Freeman, a USAF B-47 pilot. This handsome Texan moved his Yankee bride to his home state while obtaining his Master’s degree from Texas A&M.
The Freeman’s and their five daughters frequently piled into the family station wagon for base assignments in California and Florida, with side trips to New England. She was a true military wife, active in the Officer’s Wives Club organizations.
She always supported her husband. In 1967, he left her here with five children under the age of twelve for a one year remote assignment to Ascension Island. She loved taking her children to the beach during this time.
Norma, who “neva” lost her charming Bostonian accent, thrived in Indialantic. Their home was always filled with the sounds of happy children and everyone was always welcomed. She joined the PEO service organization and taught Sunday school at St. Paul’s Methodist and Eastminster.
Her true passions were playing tennis at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, where she made many lifelong friends, and enjoying Frank Sinatra, often by the full moon. Norma loved traveling to Europe and Hawaii and often visited family.
She is survived by her sister, Christine (Thomas) Erickson; husband, Lt. Col. George R. Freeman, retired; daughters, Debra (Mike) Shannon, Susan (Mike) Crawford, Sandra (Mike) O’Reilly, Beth (Phillip) Parmer, and Jennifer (William) Lazzaroni.
She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandsons, as well as a dozen nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 3:30p.m. at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, with a visitation the hour before. Entombment will follow immediately on-site. A reception will be held at the Kiwi Tennis Club after the services, from 5:00-7:00p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, (321) 268-9144.
