Born on April 15, 1937, in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland, Peter grew up in a lively family of ten children. As a young man, he left home to pursue work in Scotland, later settling in England before making his home in the United States.
A skilled tradesman, Peter was renowned for his extraordinary physical strength, a trait that defined his work and his resilient spirit. His pride in his Irish heritage shone through in his stories of Cookstown and his enduring connection to his roots.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen Murphy; his children, James McHugh, Eileen McElroy, Peter McHugh, Anne McHenry (Daniel), Christopher McHugh (Gurneet Singh), and Caroline Scimone (Michael); and his siblings, Mary Hegarty and Patrick.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila Scanlon; son, Michael McHugh; and siblings, Joseph, John, Gerald, Elizabeth Quinn, Eileen O’Donnell, Thomas, and Henry.
The family will hold a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of America and also to St. Francis Reflections Lifestage Care of Brevard County.
